Crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum) is a fast-growing, leafy plant known for its vibrant red flower heads and soft green leaves. It is commonly used in meadows and gardens and grows well in a variety of conditions.
Crimson clover is beneficial for tortoises because it is safe to eat in moderation and provides a good source of fiber and plant-based nutrients that support healthy digestion. The leaves and flowers can add variety and enrichment to a tortoise’s diet, encouraging natural foraging behavior. When grown without chemicals, crimson clover can be offered as part of a balanced, mixed-plant diet, helping mimic the diverse vegetation tortoises encounter in the wild.
For warm climates like Las Vegas, plant tortoise-friendly seeds such as chicory, clover, and dandelion in early spring or fall when temperatures are milder. Choose a well-draining area with partial to full sun, loosen the top few inches of soil, and lightly scatter the seeds over the surface-these varieties germinate best when not buried too deep. Gently rake or press them into the soil, keep the area consistently moist (but not soaked) until established, and expect quick sprouting within 1-2 weeks. Once growing, water moderately and allow the plants to mature naturally, creating a hardy, grazing-friendly patch for your tortoises.
